Farmers Ask The Center For A Framework On MSP Law; The Third Meeting Yields No Results
The Third Round Of Negotiations Between The Three Union Ministers And The Protesting Farmers Ended Without Any Progress Being Made On The Difficult Demand For A Guarantee Of The Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Though Agreement Was Reached On Certain Issues, The Farmers Remained Unwavering In Their Demand For A Legal Guarantee For MSP Of Their Agricultural Produce During The Meeting, Which Lasted Well Into The Night On Thursday.
Farmer Leaders Have Requested That The Government Develop A Framework For The MSP Law, And A Fourth Round Of Meetings Is Scheduled For This Sunday.
The Farmers Emphasized That There Hasn’t Been An MSP Guarantee Law For The Last Two Years. In Addition, The Farmers Requested That The Government Guarantee The Minimum Support Price (MSP) For Their Crops Until A Law Based On The Proposals Of The Late Agricultural Scientist MS Swaminathan Was Put Into Effect.
The “Green Revolution’s” Father, MS Swaminathan, Advocated Increasing The MSP To A Minimum Of 50% Over The Weighted Average Cost Of Production. The Formula, Which Farmers Have Been Requesting, Became Known As C2+50%. In Order To Guarantee Farmers Receive A 50% Return On Investment, It Covers Input Cost Of Capital And Land Rent (Called C2).
According To Sources, The Ministers Stated That The Government Needed More Time To Evaluate The MSP Guarantee Law’s Economic Viability. However, The Government Made It Apparent That It Did Not Agree With The Farmers’ Request For A Debt Waiver.
Union Minister Of Agriculture Arjun Munda, Minister Of Commerce And Industry Piyush Goyal, And Minister Of State For Home Affairs Nityanand Rai Were Present At The Meeting.
The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee And SKM (Non-Political) Leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal Represented The Farmers.
