In Tihar, Bhagwant Mann meets Delhi CM; the Supreme Court will hear Kejriwal’s appeal against the ED arrest.
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met in Tihar Jail on Tuesday.
This marks the second meeting between Kejriwal and Mann in Tihar.
Additionally, the Supreme Court will continue its hearing on Kejriwal’s petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy today.
The top court questioned the Delhi CM about why he hadn’t submitted a bail request to the trial court during yesterday’s hearing.
Senior attorney Abhishek Singhvi, who represented Kejriwal in court, was questioned by the bench, “You did not move any application for bail before the trial court?” Singhvi said, “No.”
The bench questioned, “Why did you not file any application for bail?” The attorney mentioned a number of grounds, one of which was that Kejriwal’s detention was “illegal”.
Kejriwal’s case contesting his detention by the central investigation agency was heard by the bench, which was presided over by Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta. Singhvi also presented a thorough case before the bench disputing his “illegal arrest”.
Kejriwal, who has been in judicial custody since April 1 and will remain there till May 7, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21, after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him protection from coercive action by the federal anti-money laundering agency. The chief minister is currently lodged in Tihar jail.
Latest updates on Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest:
According to sources, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal will meet at Tihar jail today at 12:30 p.m. Mann and the AAP chairman are scheduled to meet in Tihar for the second time.
Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to remain as Delhi Chief Minister following his arrest, according to the Delhi High Court on Monday, was a “personal call.” However, his absence did not prevent books from being supplied to students enrolled in MCD schools.
The high court emphasised that the chief minister’s duty is far from ceremonial, particularly in a metropolis like Delhi, and that the CM must essentially be accessible around-the-clock to manage any crisis in the state. “National interest and public interest demands that no person who holds this post is incommunicado or absent for a long stretch of time or for an uncertain period of time,” it stated.
