The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced on Thursday that the exam format for Class 11 and 12 in the academic year 2024–2025 has been changed. Under the new format, the CBSE exams will now mostly consist of idea application questions instead of long replies.
Joseph Emanuel, Director of Academics at the CBSE, stated in reference to the announcement of the change in the format of the examinations for Class 11 and 12, “The board in accordance with National Education Policy, 2020 has taken multiple steps towards implementation of Competency-Based Education in schools, ranging from aligning assessment to competencies, development of exemplar resources for teachers and students as well as continuous capacity building of the teachers etc.”
Percentage of competency-focused questions increased
However, the percentage of constructed response questions with both short and long answers has decreased from 40 to 30%. Competency-focused questions, such as multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based questions, source-based integrated questions, and any other type, now make up 50% of the total.
“The main emphasis of the board was to create an educational ecosystem that would move away from rote memorization and towards learning that is focused on developing the creative, critical and systems thinking capacities of students to meet the challenges of the 21st century,” Emanuel said.
According to Emanuel, for the academic year 2024–2025, the board is still working to align assessment and evaluation procedures with NEP– 2020.
