
“A new yoga economy is emerging globally,” said Prime Minister Modi in Srinagar on the tenth International Day of Yoga

On Friday, the International Day of Yoga, PM Modi shared a yoga performance at the Sher-i-“Happy International Yoga Day! From the country of Kashmir, I wish to congratulate everyone on this wonderful day! I suggested that International Yoga Day be observed at the UN ten years ago. 177 countries agreed with India’s proposal, a record in and of itself. 35,000 people joined together to execute yoga poses on Delhi’s Kartavyapath in 2015,” he said.
“Happy International Yoga Day! I’d like to congratulate everyone on this lovely day from the nation of Kashmir! Ten years ago, I proposed that the UN commemorate International Yoga Day. India’s plan was approved by 177 nations, a record in and of itself. In 2015, 35,000 individuals came together to perform yoga positions on Delhi’s Kartavyapath,” he added.
On International Yoga Day, I have had the privilege of coming to Kashmir, the land of yoga and meditation. In Srinagar, we are feeling the power that yoga gives us. I congratulate all the people of the country and those doing Yoga in every corner of the world on International Yoga Day from the land of Kashmir,” PM Modi added.
According to him, the growth of yoga over the past ten years has altered public perception of the discipline, and going forward, a new yoga economy is emerging globally.
“The growth of yoga over the past ten years has altered public view of the practice. The world is witnessing the emergence of a new yoga economy today. We’re seeing the emergence of a new yoga tourism trend in India, spanning from Kerala to Rishikesh and Kashi. Travelers from over the globe are flocking to India in search of real yoga instruction. Consequently, the massive influx of people is driving growth in industries such as hospitality, tourism, fashion, etc. PM Modi stated, “This is opening up new job opportunities for young people.”
The Prime Minister also recalled Charlotte Chopin, a 101-year-old woman Yoga teacher from France who was awarded the Padma Shri this year and said that the number of people doing yoga all over the world is constantly increasing.
“In India this year, a 101-year-old female yoga instructor from France was honored with the Padma Shri. Despite never having visited India, she devoted her entire life to promoting awareness about Yoga. Currently, esteemed universities and institutions worldwide are conducting research on Yoga, resulting in the publication of research papers,” he said.
The Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, was presented to 100-year-old French national Charlotte Chopin, a yoga practitioner, at the Padma Awards 2024, which took place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
